Viva Paper Towel

VIVA PAPER TOWELL

VIVA PAPER TOWELL the unsung result of mixed media collage.
When I create anything with paint involved I always clean up using Viva brand paper towels. Why you ask?
  • because often the towel produces a better background for artwork by accident than when I try to plan it.
  • The absorbency and strength of Viva mean the dried towel is perfect to add freehand machine embroidery and embellishments to.
  • You can iron Vlisofix or interfacing to the back to stabilise it, tear it up and collage it, cut out shapes, stencil, draw and add more patterns.

Techniques for colouring
  • Clean dirty brushes with a dry or damp Viva towel by rubbing the bristles into a towel.
  • Clean up the surface of a palette. If lots of paint remains then use several towels. If the palette has only a little paint remaining then wet the towel first and rub it over the surface to clean and absorb the paint.
  • Squidge a damp paint infused towel in your hand to blend colours and create all over colour wash. (wear gloves)
  • Dab a scrunched up coloured towel onto the paint pallet surface to add contrasting colours. Roll the towel around in your hand to vary the paints position.
  • If using metallic paint, dab a  coloured towel onto the palette for excellent highlights.
  • Don't plan the colours just clean them up and let the magic happen!

Adding more pattern

  • stencil or stamp patterns onto a dry towel
  • press sequin waist onto a wet towel, the paint will lift off and the wet sequin waist can be used to stencil the pattern onto another towel.
roller graph stamp with squares pattern added

I use my stash as the background for small window gift cards which have other decoration and stitching over the top
I also cut out flowers from the towel to make delicate designs.

Evil Queen Costume

Evil Queen - Cosplay My version of Regina, the Evil Queen,  costume from the Once Upon A Time TV series. I chose the dress she wears when giving Snow White the poisoned apple. Me at my Masquerade 40th Birthday Party The original costume from the series The Evil Queen with Danielle Du Barbarac (Ever After) AKA Katie Millan who also hand made her costume. Materials Main Fabric: finding the main fabric for the dress was the hardest part. I searched all over fabric stores in Adelaide for a navy & purple brocade fabric but came up empty handed. The fabric I eventually chose was this black and silver brocade upholstery fabric I bought on sale at Spotlight for $8 a metre. Contrast skirt overlay: I bought a sheer curtain fabric with a flowering snowball quilt block pattern woven into it. This is used for the over skirt and collar. Synthetic horsehair fabric was used to stabilise the collar. Embellishments: For the embroidery I used purple ...

'Sewing Patterns' APP review

'Sewing Patterns' App review The app I was using to comprehensively catalog my sewing patterns crashed  when an iOS update I did on my iPad was no longer supported by the app.  This was in October 2020 and because the developers had not bothered to update the app in years. No warning, just gone. I discovered this while shopping for fabric and trying to work out how much I needed for the pattern I planned to use.  So I took this as an opportunity to cull and resort my patterns which I have been collecting for over 30 years.  The next month was devoted to this undertaking and surprisingly, it was a very enjoyable experience to reacquaint myself with my patterns.  I began by sorting my patterns into defined sections in my pattern cabinet.  I then had to make a complete list ready to upload into a new app. Now I had to “audition” potential app’s for suitability. I did some research and consulted other social media forums for options. The previous app I used was...
